The waffles are super rich, fluffy, and soft on the inside. But still have a nice crispy outside – like every good waffle should. They are filled with Nutella and make for the perfect sweet breakfast or dessert. I cannot wait to hear what you think 🙂

The taste and texture
These waffles taste exactly like Nutella. The primary flavors come from the Nutella we add to the waffle batter.
Once cooked, Nutella waffles have incredibly soft and fluffy insides with a crispy outside. They are not dry or dense.
Waffles vs. Pancakes
Both waffles and pancakes call for similar ingredients, but their cooking methods and textures differ. Waffles are cooked in a waffle iron and are much crispier and airier than pancakes. Conversely, pancakes are cooked on the stovetop and are much softer and fluffier than waffles. It’s also important to note that waffles typically contain more sugar to achieve that crispy texture.
Ingredients needed
These Nutella waffles call for eight simple ingredients. You need flour, eggs, Nutella, your favorite milk, and a few other ingredients. Here is a list of everything you need so you are prepared:
- Milk: You can use any milk you want! This Nutella waffle recipe is so customizable. Personally, I love unsweetened vanilla almond milk, but feel free to use cow’s milk (2%, skim, whole), cashew milk, oat milk, or rice milk.
- Nutella: Of course, you’ll need some Nutella for these double chocolate Nutella waffles. We blend it into the milk to make chocolaty Nutella milk.
- Eggs: For protein and to make these waffles extra fluffy.
- Vanilla Extract: A little goes a long way flavor-wise.
- Butter: I used unsalted butter. You only need a little to make sure these waffles are extra soft and NOT DRY.
- Flour: I used all-purpose flour. If you are gluten-free, use this 1:1 gluten-free all-purpose baking flour substitute.
- Baking Powder: To help these waffles rise and get extra fluffy.
- Salt: For the perfect sweet and salty combo! You only need 1/4 teaspoon.

Here is a list of kitchen utensils you will need to make this super fluffy Nutella waffle recipe.

- Measuring Tools: 1/2 teaspoon, 1 teaspoon, 1 Tablespoon, and 1/2 cup.
How to make the best Nutella waffles
Nutella waffles are super easy to make in a few simple steps. They come together in under 10 minutes! Here are detailed step-by-step instructions with pictures for visual reference so any level cook can make them. The full recipe and ingredient measurements are in the recipe card’s bottom of this page.
Step 1:
First, add the milk and Nutella to a high-speed blender. Blend for 20 – 30 seconds until fully combined. It should resemble chocolate milk.
Step 2:
Then, whisk together the flour, baking powder, and salt in a large mixing bowl.
Step 3:
In another bowl, whisk the eggs, then mix in the Nutella milk, vanilla, and melted butter.
Step 4:
Add the wet ingredients to the flour mixture, and whisk gently until a batter is formed; some lumps are OK! Do not over-mix – it will make the waffles tough. Add 1 – 3 Tablespoons more of milk if the batter is too thick.
Step 5:
Heat a waffle iron and lightly grease it with non-stick spray or butter—once hot, spoon batter into the iron. You can even drizzle extra Nutella on top of the batter and use a spoon to swirl it. Close the waffle iron a cook until golden brown and the center is cooked through.
Tip: The amount of batter and cook time depends on the size and strength of your waffle iron. For best results, follow the time recommended by your waffle maker.
Step 5:
Repeat until you’ve used all your batter.
Then, let the waffles sit for 1 – 2 minutes before serving warm with toppings of your choice – I love extra Nutella, fresh fruit, and whipped cream!
Expert tips for homemade Nutella waffles
- Don’t overmix the waffle batter. Gently whisk the wet and dry ingredients together until a batter is formed. It’s ok if there are some lumps. If you overmix the batter, your waffles will be tough.
- Grease your waffle iron. Don’t forget to do this, or else your waffles will get stuck to the iron and break apart.
- Don’t open the waffle iron until they are done cooking! If you open the waffle iron too soon, the waffles will sink and become dense. You’ll know these Nutella waffles are done cooking when steam comes out of the sides.
- Make these Nutella waffles gluten-free. Swap the all-purpose flour with 1:1 gluten-free baking flour (this is the best one) to make these Nutella waffles 100% gluten-free.
- Add extra Nutella swirls to the waffles. Feel free to drizzle extra Nutella on top of the batter and use a spoon to swirl it before cooking.
- Every waffle iron is different. The amount of batter and cook time depends on the size and strength of your waffle iron. For best results, follow the time recommended by your waffle maker.
- Use baking powder, not baking soda. This ensures your waffles are soft and fluffy!
Ingredient substitution suggestions:
If you don’t have an ingredient or two, don’t worry! I only recommend substituting 1 or 2 ingredients since the original recipe is so delicious. Here are my recommendations:
- Nutella: Use another chocolate hazelnut spread.
- Almond Milk: Use any type of milk you want. You can use 2%, skim, whole, oat, cashew, or rice.
- Butter: Substitute with melted coconut oil.
- All-Purpose Flour: You can use bread flour, white whole wheat flour, or whole wheat (this will affect the taste of the waffles).
- Make them Gluten-Free: Substitute the all-purpose flour with 1:1 gluten-free baking flour (this is the best kind) to make these Nutella waffles 100% gluten-free.
How to serve Nutella waffles:
Here are a few delicious ideas on how to serve your Nutella waffles:
- An extra drizzle of Nutella
- Powdered sugar
- Whipped cream
- Vanilla or plain yogurt
- Fresh strawberries
- Fresh blueberries, raspberries, or blackberries
- Banana slices
- Maple syrup
- Drizzle of honey
- Ice cream! I love vanilla
Frequently Asked Questions
Can I stuff the waffles with extra Nutella?
Yes! Scoop about ⅓ cup of batter onto the heated, greased waffle iron; then, quickly add 1 Tablespoon of Nutella in the center and add about 2 more tablespoons of batter on top of the Nutella, so it is covered. Finally, close the waffle iron and cook the waffle!
Do they taste like Nutella?
Yes, these waffles taste like Nutella hazelnut spread.
Are waffles better than pancakes?
That is a personal preference. Waffles are crispy on the outside and “airier” than pancakes. On the other hand, pancakes are softer and lighter. Both are delicious!
Can I turn these into Nutella pancakes?
You can turn these Nutella waffles into Nutella pancakes too. Simply add 2 – 3 extra tablespoons of milk. Then, heat a large pan or pancake griddle to medium heat and add a little butter. Once melted, pour about 1/4 cup of batter onto the hot pan for each pancake. Cook for about 2 minutes until little bubbles form on the tops of the pancakes, and the bottoms are golden brown. Gently flip and cook the other side for about 1 minute.
How to make waffles less dry?
To ensure your waffles are soft and moist on the inside, make sure to use butter, not oil, in the batter. Butter releases more moisture than oil which ensures soft waffles.
Does Nutella have dairy?
Yes, Nutella has dairy. Nutella is not a dairy-free product.
Can I make them gluten-free?
Absolutely! You can easily make these Nutella waffles gluten-free by substituting the all-purpose flour with 1:1 gluten-free baking flour. This is the best brand.
Is Nutella gluten-free?
Yes, Nutella is 100% gluten-free. If you are gluten-free or celiac, you can enjoy Nutella.
Can I freeze homemade waffles?
Yes, you can freeze homemade waffles for up to 2 months. Simply let them cool to room temperature, place them in freezer-safe bags, and freeze them. Once you’re ready to defrost them, pop them in the toaster, toaster oven, or oven (350°F for 5 – 10 minutes).
How to store and reheat:
Storing: Nutella waffles are best enjoyed warm right off the waffle iron. However, you can store leftovers for meal prep in an airtight container in the refrigerator for up to 4 days.
Reheating: For best results, reheat in a toaster or toaster oven. Do not reheat waffles in the microwave – they will be soggy.
